One of the best walking tours I've been on

, May 2022
An amazing walking tour that covered a great overview of Japan's history, the significance of the various notable sites we saw and some great insights into how life and religion have changed over the years. Highly enjoyable and the tour guide (Fumiko) really made the difference with her local knowledge.
Response from Host , May 2022

Wonderful insight into a beautiful corner of Tokyo

I had an amazing tour of Yanaka with Naoko as my guide. As it happened, that day I was her only guest. Naoko is personable. flexible, and knowledgeable - she answered my million and one questions about Japan - and she also had thought of everything, including taking photos of me along the way to send later. The tour was paced well, and Naoko was very sensitive to whether I needed a break, or was curious to veer in a different direction.
Yanaka itself is a charming and surprising corner of Tokyo - peaceful, artsy, full of history and atmosphere. There are lovely surprises around every corner. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you are interested in history and want to see a place outside the typical tourist spots in the city.
Enjoyed the walk and information given on sights visited. Arika was knowledgable and spoke English very well.

We spent the morning walking Yanaka with a private guide, Sumiko, who was very knowledgeable and friendly. We toured temples and shrines, stopped for a delicious lunch as our son was starving! We finished up the tour shopping in an area with wonderful, authentic Japanese products - we didn't want to purchase goods made in another country. It's hard to believe that you're in Tokyo while walking Yanaka; it's peaceful, quiet and beautiful.

Great tour!

I loved this tour. I had taken tours of other more well-known Tokyo neighborhoods such as Akihabara and Harajuku, and Yanaka was not on my radar as I hadn’t heard it talked about much. I am so glad I took the tour though! It covered a quiet and historic part of Tokyo that I never would have seen otherwise and that is entirely different from the other neighborhoods I’ve toured. And, most important, our guide was wonderful—she took us to several unique and/or historic shops, cafes, and food stands that were by far the best part of the tour. And, the shrine we visited, though not as famous as Meiji, was the prettiest I’ve seen in Tokyo. Our guide was also very sweet. I highly recommend this tour!

Yanaka: city of charming shrines and more

Yumi was an amazing tour guide who was very flexible and knowledgeable about the history of the shrines and the city of Yanaka. We stopped at many shrines, as well as an art gallery, sake shop and even an owl cafe! We enjoyed learning the customs and stopping for beautiful photos along the way. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to get a different side of busy, cosmopolitan Tokyo.

Great tour in Yanaka. We got to see the Tokugawa burial area, a temple, some interesting older buildings, and some back and very active streets. Incredibly hot day (95 with 95% humidity) so we took it slow and the guide (Junko) was very accommodating and pleasant despite the weather. Well worth taking the tour as it gives you a different view of other parts of Tokyo that aren't quite so busy.
Also work wandering around the area near the Nippori station if you're interested in textiles as it's the largest area in Tokyo for that.

What a way to see the old part of Tokyo and the little streets of Yanaka and ts surrounds. We just loved this walking trip with Junko our guide. She knew what we wanted and took her time to show us around the fantastic cemetery, tree lined residential area and the great Shrine. We saw what no tourist will see. Junko was so good to show us around, took 100s of pics of my wife and I, took us to some hidden cafes and eateries. We just loved it. Junko you made it perfect for us to show us the old Tokyo. Would recommend this tour to anyone and hope you get Junko, who is just perfect.
Excellent tour, highly recommend!

A great way to start your trip. We had 7 in our group and it was a fun bunch. Our guide, Yuki, did an amazing job of explaining history, the significance and meanings of what we were seeing and taught us the proper way to cleanse and bow at a temple (there are 3 bows so you need to know which one you're doing)! Yuki gave us a great understanding of Japan's history. As you start to understand the timeline of how things took shape in Japan over the centuries it's truly remarkable and really brought what we were seeing to life. It's just a great way to ask a ton of questions and "get your feet wet" in Tokyo.

My husband and I took this tour. There were two additional people to join the tour. We saw parts of Tokyo that we would have missed. There are buildings dating before WWII -- not many. These have been preserved. We also visited an old cemetery and it was very interesting. I particularly enjoyed walking through some of the neighborhoods. There is a LOT of walking!! I would recommend this tour. Our guide was enthusiastic and helpful.

After confusion about the meeting point at the RR station due to miss wording , we got off to a good start. Only criticism was that there was much too much time spent in the cemetery looking at similar tomb stores and not enough time looking at sites. The beer garden site was a welcome stop. Recommend more time looking at interesting sites. We had little time of review the shopping areas. Overall a good tour.
Such a great tour.

Our guide Hizuru made this one of the best walking tours I have participated in. The walk through the cemeteries, narrow lanes and to the amazing azalea garden were so interesting. She organised a tea ceremony on the way where we got to chose antique tea bowls and were provided with hand-drawn pictures and info on out selected bowls. All through the tour she took photos which she sent to us within two hours of having completed the tour.
Prior to the tour our lovely guide had sent her picture, phone number, itinerary, meeting point etc. We had high expectations and they were all met. Definitely recommend!

Big thanks to Mikiko for making this walking tour an enjoyable afternoon. The cemetery and temples were interesting and the stops along the way for snacks were a nice touch (do try the delicious cardamom roll if you find it!). Mikiko was also very adoring of our nearly 1-year-old son, who had a great time too. Do note that while we did the walk with a stroller, there are some steps and bumpy parts along the way - would recommend if you are taking a stroller to have 2 adults with you. Mikiko also went out of her way after the tour to get us sorted with a bus - a wonderful guide! :)

Really enjoyed this tour! We are a family of 4 16yr old boy and 17 yr old girl and we all enjoyed this so much! Hisako was great guide and had so much knowledge of the area! We had so many questions and she was able to answer them all! Lots of walking which was new for us but it felt great!
We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.
