Your day trip starts as you board your coach or minibus in central Rome for the drive to Pompeii, one of the world’s most fascinating archaeological sites—a city frozen in a time capsule. An onboard host is available to answer any questions during the journey. Learn about Pompeii, which was destroyed by heavy volcanic ash in AD 79 when Mt. Vesuvius erupted, killing the residents of the city.

When you arrive, you are free to explore on your own until it’s time to return to Rome. Stroll down the ancient lanes, imagining what life was like here 2,000 years ago. Pass the limestone columns still standing along Via degli Augustali, and check out artifacts and ruins from the forum, thermal baths, temple, theater, and homes. All walking paths are marked with frescoes that depict scenes from daily life in Pompeii, which give context to what you’re seeing and help you find your way around.

Head back to your tour vehicle in the mid-afternoon for the drive back to Rome, where your day trip ends.

Optional excavations and tour upgrade: When booking, you have the option to include access to the excavations of Pompeii and a guided tour with an informative guide. This tour is limited to 25 people.

Terrible waste of money!!
, Aug 2020
Unfortunately this tour was a waste of time, money and a waste of our final day in Rome. Even worse Enjoy Rome, the tour company showed absolutely no remorse what so ever. We had to meet at the pick up location at 7:10am for the drive to Pompeii and we arrived at 10.30am. When we arrived at 10.30am we were told our tour did not start until 12pm and until then we had to wait outside the front gates, in the heat and could not go inside. After waiting until 12pm our tour guide led us to the front entrance, where although we had paid for priority entrance tickets we had to wait a further 1hr 15 mins to get inside the front gate in 37° weather. We had been at Pompeii for just short of 3 hours before we even got inside, using up the time that we actually got to spend inside that we had paid for. Though we had upgraded for our ticket + a 2 hour tour, the people that also travelled with the same company but not purchased the upgrade were able to buy their ticket upon arrival and enter Pompeii at 10.30am as soon as we arrived, so essentially we paid more for a lot less. Once we finally got inside and our 2 hour tour started, it finished in 1.5 hours instead of 2. By this point we had been in the sun outside for 3 hours waiting and for 1.5 hours inside and were extremely disappointed in our experience having not seen hardly any of the Pompeii highlights. At this point it was actually the time we were supposed to be leaving Pompeii on our Enjoy Rome bus back fo Rome but we had barely seen anything inside. I contacted the company who let us take 1 hour longer though we couldn’t stay this full time as it was our last evening and we had dinner reservations in Rome so we were then forced to run around in the heat to try to see the things our guide hadn’t shown us (even though she ended our tour 30mins earlier than we paid for). Once arriving back to Rome we missed our dinner reservation at the restaurant we had waited all holiday to go to due to arriving back to Rome late. Enjoy Rome showed no remorse and thought that because they offered us 1 hour extra in Pompeii it made up for our 3 hour wait outside, the fact our tour finished 30 minutes earlier than it should have AND we then missed our dinner reservation. Not just this but we saw hardly any of Pompeii. Had they been more organised from the very beginning and not booked us on a 12pm tour when we arrived so much earlier, the entire day would have flowed much better. Terrible service and attitude shown by the staff afterwards and not a care for the experience we had. Would NOT recommend to anyone - save your money for a better company or walk around without a tour guide as the entire thing was a joke and a total waste of money and time!! If I could give 0/5 stars I would.
Pleasant trip!

Great value for money. I would recommend just taking the transport rather than the guided tour. Catia was our bus guide and she was very knowledgeable and friendly.

While the bus was comfortable and the guide was friendly the trip is far too expensive for what you get. They also really push you to upgrade for a guided tour which is €40 per person on top of the expense of the journey... I would highly recommend using the train to save yourself some money!

The guide on the bus and the guide for the tour were both very personable, giving time in the area and answering questions. Knowledgable about the site
Worth the investment

The meeting place was really gross and smelled of vomit and garbage. From there, it could only get better, which fortunately it did. Katia was excellent but not too talkative, the stops were clean with many bathrooms and average priced drinks and snacks. Pompeii itself was incredible, as always. The tour guide there (we upgraded to the guided tour) was very personable and good. Although it was hot, water was plentiful and free from the fountains so we managed well. One word of advice: try to sit with no one behind you so you can tip your seat back. I tried, but the people behind me (whose seats were fully reclined) said "No no! Is too much!!!" when I tried to recline a little.
Comfortable trip.

Great information and very comfortable bus. Need to have Pompeii maps to hand out. Rest stop was nice.
Pompeii day trip

I recently went on the Rome to Pompeii shuttle bus and independent day trip with Viator. I can completely recommend this option. It was perfect for our family (we have 3 young kids) and doing an independent tour was also ideal given our kids' ages (all 3 are younger than 10). In the Pompeiian heat in July, they wouldn't have been able to manage a 2-hour guided tour. We did a bit of research in advance and were able to hit the main sites in Regios 6 and 7, which I recommend. Overall, this a really good, cost-effective option for families!

Good Option If You Are Short on Time

For those who are in Rome and wish to visit Pompei but are short on time this is a good option. Pompei is well worth visiting. The only downside of this tour is that most of the day is spent in transit to and from Pompei leaving about 3 1/2 hours to visit the site. I opted for the guided tour. Although the guide was knowledgeable the tour moved slowly leaving only an hour for independent exploration of the site. I would recommend the tour if you are in Rome and are short on time. But weigh the fact that you will only be at Pompei for only about 3 1/2 hours and if you take the guided tour you will probably be left with an hour to explore the park.
A trip to the past.

The trip was a blast, got pick up at a designated location. Took a 3 hour ride on a air conditioner bus with very comfortable seats. The English giude was very friendly and knowledgeable of the trip down to Pompeii. Would do it again and would recommend.
