Colosseum/Roman Forum

Make your own way to a central meeting point in Rome to meet your guide and group.

Walk over to the Colosseum with your skip-the-line ticket in hand, then bypass the main entrance lines to head straight inside the arena via the Gladiator’s Gate. Transporting you back in millennia, your guide regales you with stories of the gladiators who fought here to their death.

From the arena, head up to the first floor to see where the bloodthirsty Roman crowds bayed, and gaze out over Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum—your next stop.

Leave the Colosseum, and walk over to the forum as you hear tales of imperial-era Rome. Wander around the main ruins and monuments of the ancient plaza, which was a center of political activity in the city’s heyday.

Finish your tour near the Roman Forum.

NOTE: There is a new rule at the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill that only small backpacks and regular-size handbags are allowed inside. Guests with larger bags are not allowed to enter (there are no storage facilities) and all guests must now pass through a security check before entering the Colosseum.

Stop At:
Colosseum
Step off the tourist track in the Colosseum and get a gladiator’s-eye-view by using their special entrance and stepping onto the normally off-limits arena floor. You can’t get closer to the action than this. The arena floor is where people actually fought and died in the Colosseum. While most visitors only ever see it from the stands, you’ll bypass long, general entrance lines and step directly onto it via the special Gladiator’s Gate. As you marvel at the great amphitheater around you, your expert guide will tell stories to transport back nearly 2,000 years, when vicious blood sports were the most popular form of entertainment in Rome. During your tour you’ll also explore the rest of the Colosseum, including the first floor and Roman Forum overlook.

Great walking tour of the Colosseum, Roman Fort and Palatine Hill. Tour was 2 1/2 hours with a huge amount of interesting information from our guide Bruno. It’s worth noting, we are relatively fit, and were prepared for walking in the heat (shoes, hats and water)- several in our group struggled and did not complete the tour - an older lady with reduced mobility and a family with several young children- please consider your ability, the information mentioned walking and shoes- the temperature was about 36C (96F approx) and there is limited shade (guide did stop in shade to talk whenever possible). We were prepared for walking and heat and so thoroughly enjoyed our tour.

Our guide Nick was excellent. He was knowledgeable and entertaining. It was an extremely hot and humid day but Nick made it bearable. The tour was well organized, not too long or too hurried. Plenty of time to take pictures and we heard a lot of history of this beautiful historical site

Let me start by saying that I don’t enjoy giving a negative review. I accept the fact that even though my family’s experience was negative that doesn’t mean everyone had the same experience but this tour was so bad I can’t find a positive to offset the negatives. Let me start by saying, skip the Colosseum all together. This is the second time we have taken a tour of it and both times we didn’t care for it. We gave it another try because our kids wanted to see it and we thought maybe the first time was just an unusually bad experience. The truth is there isn’t anything in the Colosseum worth seeing and the guides don’t add anything you can’t learn from watching the movie Gladiator. The Roman Forum that is connected to the Colosseum complex on the other hand is fantastic but as we discovered as a consequence of this particular tour the Forum is much better when done on your own, not part of a tour. On the day we took this tour it was 100 F. Our tour guide was the only one that day that did not find shaded areas to stand and tell his stories. At one point he stood us in direct sunlight for 40 straight minutes while he spoke. I know because I kept checking the time because I couldn’t believe he would do that. We spent an hour and a half in the Colosseum, all in direct sun, before moving on to the Forum. Immediately upon entering the Forum there is a water fountain. Our group is the only one that didn’t stop for water. That was the point where we had enough. We left the group to explore on our own and it was great. Lots to see in the Forum but no groups from any companies actual enter any of the buildings to see the amazing things inside. My pro tip on this experience is don’t pay for any tours, do it all on your own. You’ll see more and enjoy it more. Also if you don’t trust my opinion and you try this tour anyway, stay away from the cafe where the tour meets, the most expensive one we encountered in Rome!
