After meeting your guide in central Lisbon, journey north in a cozy minivan to Almourol Castle one of Portugal’s most historical sites. Along the drive learn about the Knights Templar who used this castle to secure the boundary created by the Tagus River. Arrive at the river near the castle and enjoy a boat cruise to its gates. Then, wander through this medieval fortification and steep in its history.

Continue from here with a drive to the serene village of Constância. Hear about the renowned Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, famous for his poem 'Os Lusíadas,' who used to spend much of his time here. Alongside your guide, stroll through the illustrious Constância Park, where the Knights Templar used to savor the natural atmosphere. After your walk, stop for a delectable bite of an almond and egg treat (included).

Next, head to the charming city of Tomar, home to some of Portugal’s most impressive monuments and buildings. Gain insight from your guide about how the Knights Templar used a religious code to form the city, like the four monuments stationed around the city to resemble a crucifix. In Tomar, see famed monuments such as the 12th-century Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit the Castle of Tomar. Then, take a break for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). Afterward, venture to the Gothic-style Church of Santa Maria do Olivais, a gorgeous 12th-century church erected for the Knights Templar.

Following Tomar, step back into your minivan for your return trip to Lisbon.

    Tomar
Tomar was a land given as a fief to the Templars. It was especially important in the 15th century when it was a center for Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator, the Grand Master of the Order of Christ, the organization that succeeded the Templars in Portugal. In here we can visit the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, the headquarters of the Knights Templar and a pantheon of all Grand Masters.

The small details in what the guide had to say. The sweets. Very knowledgeable. Very nice guide. We got separated from the group but he found us, he took us to an utterly excellent restaurant for lunch with authentic traditional ancient food.

Our guide was very informative. We had a small boat trip to get to the original castle of the Knights Templar (which few tours have on their agendas) and received much information about their history. We had ample time to climb up through the castle, the walls and the towers. The guide explained who the Knights were, the ascent and decline of the Knights, and how they fought their enemies. The tour then went to the final castle, in which they had resided, and a church (with its own history) close to the castle. Very good tour.

Visiting the Almoural Castle built (originally) centuries ago by the Knights Templar to defend their land claims was a delight- we had a perfect day and a nice group of travelling companions (Boston USA and Bavaria Germany). The boat ride to the castle, then exploring the castle was a fun experience. I especially enjoyed sampling queijinhos de Ceu while in Constância. Church of the Olives was very educational. The highlight was the monastery of Tomar- huge, expansive, impressive; the church was sumptuous and humbling.

Living History - A great tour

This is an outstanding tour. If you like history then you will have a field day. The Knights Templar has always been a part of history that I couldn’t quite connect with traditional topics. Like a jigsaw, after this tour, the bits connected into place. Our host was Miguel ( who is the tour firm owner). His knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject was obvious for all to see and hear. The centre for the tour was the ancient city of Tomar - some 80 kms from Lisbon. The monastery and castle dominate the visit. – So interesting. Miguel was the perfect host speaking several languages to all the guests. It was a fantastic day. If you are a Da Vinci code type of person you will love this tour. - Thoroughly recommended.

This was a great tour at the beginning of my trip. The pickup location was 1 block from my hotel so that was a huge plus. We started the tour with a drive to Tomar to visit a knights Templar castle on an island. Our tour guide Daniel gave our group a lot of history on the knights Templar. After spending about 45 mins in the first castle, We visited a monastery that had such rich catholic history. Daniel explained the different architectural styles within the castle throughout the monastery which have it that much more meaning. Afterwards Daniel took us to a lunch where I had wild boar soup with cabbage and beans which was so delicious. We wrapped up the day we visited a church and Daniel tied in every location with the history of the knights Templar. I highly recommend you bring an extra charger because you’ll take lots of pics. If you’re a history buff you’ll definitely enjoy this excursion.

I enjoyed this tour that included Constancia and Tomar and the Convent of Christ. We saw Almoural Castle from the outside, but they were unexpectedly conducting military operations there that morning, so could not do the boat and go to the castle. Carlos was a great guide, and did all the information in both English and Spanish. It was a really good day and I learned a lot!
