Charming walking tour with Alejandra
, Jun 2022
Alejandra was the sweetest person and we very much enjoyed her tour. Please send our regards to her and thank her.
Amazing day trip!

Beautiful town! The tour was very well organized. I ended up going solo because my friend was feeling sick and canceled at the last minute. I was feeling a bit nervous about going alone, but felt much more reassured once I was picked up from my airbnb. The driver arrived exactly on time and gave me clear instructions regarding the ferry and where he would meet me upon my arrival. He was very friendly and patient with me since my Spanish is not amazing. Once I arrived in Colonia, my guide was waiting for me and took me on a walking tour of the town. I’m horrible with names, I wish I wrote it down so I could include it here but she was great! She was very knowledgeable and friendly. Her English was perfect also and she was easy to talk to. I’m so happy that I went!
A great tour of an historic town!!!

Learning about Colonia’s rich history, architecture, traditions & enchanting people! Our guide guided us from beginning to end. It was a cold, rainy and windy day but it was all worth it.
Great Trip but Things To Know Beforehand...
, Dec 2021
If you're looking for something to supplement your time while in Buenos Aires, then a daytrip to Colonia del Sacramento could be just the ticket! However, due to covid, tourism and therefore, by extension, Colonia itself is very quiet right now. Unfortunately, we went during the weekday and even the museums are closed except Fri-Sun. But, it was still a little city worth seeing and the tour we had was great! We learned a ton about Colonia as well as Uruguay as a whole. It almost made me want to pack up and move - lol! Do bear in mind for your own time budgeting that the ferry is more like 90 mins each way, not 50 mins. And customs on the way back adds time so get off towards the front of the group if you can - sit in back of the ferry. Also, as it was a very early start to the day, we chose to come back early on the 430 ferry. We had more than enough time after our guided tour to climb to the top of the lighthouse (180 stairs I believe), and also to have a great lunch in the "downtown area." Try the Chivito!! It's a ridiculous amount of food, but delicious! (pro tip: share with someone and skip the pizza - it's better in Buenos Aires) So long as you don't mind having to go to a lab within 72 hours before for a PCR test and filling out a bunch of forms to go in and out of Argentina (you have to do the DDJJ twice - once for leaving Argentina and then again for returning, but you can do everything as son as you have your PCR results electronically, no hard copies needed) and into Uruguay (one form for entering the country also), it's totally worth it.

Colonia day trip
, Feb 2020
My husband and I did a day trip from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento. We got picked up at our hotel and were driven to the ferry and picked up by our guide on the other side. There were only 3 of us and our guide was great. The trip is a bit pricey, but we had a wonderful day.

What an amazing trip. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and fun. The perfect overview of Uruguay. Can highly recommend this well organized and educational experience.
Lovely historical fort in a quaint town
, Jan 2020
We had a great time seeing Colonia. Our tour guide was wonderful, explaining a lot about the history of the town and also providing insight into Uruguayan life. She also suggested a delicious restaurant for lunch, called Charco (we echo the recommendation). Having the ferry tickets and transportation to/from the ferry was a great convenience; our driver in Buenos Aires was very nice. Don't get your hopes up about the ferry - it is designed to ship large numbers of people so there is not much in the way of windows or views. You could try for a business seat on the upper level and may be able to see more. Additionally, we ran out of things to see in Colonia; we didn't find much shopping, so we would have been fine leaving around 2ish. Instead we found a bench and watched the waves on the river.
Day Trip to a gorgeous town

Great knowledgeable and interesting guide and helpful fun driver. A bit overpriced but good for a solo traveller for safety. Book in advance or you will miss out on being in the small group activities. Really cute place to spend the day!

Good day experience

Colonia is a solid experience if you make sure to go outside the old city. Rent a bike and see other parts of the town for a full day adventure. Our guide was very nice and mainly just guided us around the old city for 90 mins.
Most excellent review!

Historical Colonia Uruguay

The ferry to Buenos Aires and back was not the newest ship in the world. But it seemed very sea worthy and got us there and back safely. The port facilities seem to be well run. The morning ferry to Colonia was nearly full (app 1,000 people). Check in, immigration and customs took nearly an hour. The tour guide met us as soon as we got off the ferry. She was very knowledgeable and her English was quite good. The history of Colonia is very interesting. We had a very nice lunch at a local restaraunt. Colonia is very clean and the people were very friendly.

Day in Colonia!
, Nov 2018
After a quick boat ride across from Buenos Aires to Colonia, Uruguay, we had a nice tour with Alejandra. She was lively and very informative, and knew her city well (one of seven English-speaking tour guides in Colonia). After a 2 1/2 hour tour, we had three hours on our own to walk around to see the sites and the culture. We had lunch at Charco, recommended by Alejandra, and it was wonderful, right on the water. While this tour was at the upper end in price, we enjoyed ourselves and liked the tour guide.

This day trip to Uruguay is amazing...
, Mar 2017
This day trip to Uruguay is amazing! It starts with a personal pickup at your hotel where you're dropped off at the boat terminal. It is a really great treat to see Buenos Aires from the coast. The seats are comfy and great for a nap on the ride over. When you arrive in Colonia, your guide meets to pick you up inside the terminal. Prepare for the 3.5 min car ride from the terminal to the old city of Colonia : Then you get a personalized walking tour through the city where all the hot spots are pointed out, a guide only location in a old hotel plaza, and recommendations to eat lunch and what do to on your free time. There is a significant number of things to do in Colonia: lighthouse with great views of the entire city, three sides surrounded by water, the old fort wall, multiple original cobblestone streets and buildings in both Portuguese and Spanish design a unique aspect of this city, many shops with local handmade items, and countless restaurants both in the old city and right outside on the main street. The walking tour takes about an hour and then you're given about 4 hours on your own. Once you meet back up with your tour guide, you're driven back to the terminal and are helped through the ticket line. Once you get back on board, the boat offers a duty free shop and a snack bar as well. Your driver from the morning will pick you up right inside the terminal in Buenos Aires and take you back to you hotel. For this trip you don't need to exchange money for Uruguayan Pesos as there is an exchange store in Colonia and is only needed for the city's museums. The Argentinian Pesos is widely accepted elsewhere in addition to being able to use your credit card at many restaurants and stores on the main street. You'll need your passport for this trip. We highly recommend this detour from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires for a relaxing day on your own pace while also being able to check a second country off your list.

Paseo a Colonia desde Buenos Aires.
, May 2022
