Returns to original departure point
Meet the chef at a central Barcelona location, then start with the fresh basics of Spanish cuisine, collecting fresh seafood from the local vendors and producers at La Boqueria, one of Barcelona’s most famous markets.

From the market, continue to a cooking school in El Born district, where you find an open kitchen, bar, and restaurant-style seating. Pour your first glass of sangria for the evening, then start preparing a range of tapas, or pintxos, classic Spanish small plates that are perfectly paired with wine.

With a chef cooking alongside you, start preparing the traditional paella, then as the rice dish simmers on a low flame, you can learn to mix your own sangria at a short drinks-making workshop. When the paella is done, sit down to the meal you’ve prepared, savoring the rich flavor of the rice and seafood (a non-seafood meal option is served by the chef for those who don’t eat seafood).

And if you’re not ready to finish the night, you're invited to a nearby bar, where you’ll be treated to a free "chupito," or shot, and enjoy drink specials throughout the evening.

Not worth the cost

We booked this cooking class hoping to be able to bring an authentic Spanish recipe home to the states since it’s supposed to be led by a Spanish chef. Only to find out our class chef wasn’t actually even a chef or Spanish, we were just going to be learning her Greek grandma’s recipe which I’m sure we could have found on YouTube for free. On top of it, we had asked for vegetarian dishes in the booking notes as my boyfriend and I don’t eat seafood & when I asked the “chef” when we went to the market about the vegetarian option her response was simply “no sorry we are only doing seafood paella”. Cut to the cooking kitchen - it’s in a very sketchy looking building but whatever. You don’t learn anything about making tapas they come out already prepared (a cheese plate, meat plate & bread) & it’s very unsanitary as all the food is finger food & no one was made to wash hands before touching the tapas (only before cooking thankfully). They also don’t tell you anything about making sangria which was a huge bummer. The booking makes it sound like they’ll at least discuss the process & there’ll be lots of sangria but alas no discussion at all and your group is given a pitcher that comes out to 1 glass per person. We left halfway through as we decided this was unfortunately not what we were expecting. Hopefully next time Viator will do a better job at vetting their international booking options.

Sangria- and paella-making fun

This was a great class. The group was very friendly, and we had a lot of fun exchanging stories about Barcelona and learning about where we all came from. We were from all over Europe and the United States! We felt like we really learned how to make paella properly. We did not learn how to make tapas, although tapas were served while the paella was cooking. We did, however, learn how to make sangria – and it was free-flowing!

Started with a shopping trip at la Boqueria. Mind blowing food. So fresh and plentiful. Then off to prepare and cook the gems we purchased. The chef was very knowledgeable and patient. Everyone had a job and got an opportunity to participate. Then we all shared the meal that we prepared. So delicious. WOW!!

The cooking experience was really good fun! Although we did put in during the booking allergies/dietary issues however they weren't addressed. Otherwise really fun!

Meeting place: Travellers Nest Bar -arrive early if you’d like a drink before starting TIP: Once the tour starts, keep up through La Bouqueria with Chef Fernando. it’s easy to get separated (no looking around on your own - come another time to explore) Fernando gave a great cooking presentation and taught us how to make the best paella! So fun to cook and connect with other people. We made pinchtos for tapas while drinking sangria, cooked paella from scratch without making the calamari tough and then made our own sangria (“3 Spanish seconds” of pouring the liquors - much more tasty that way!) . At the end, walk back to the original meeting place for dessert and more drinks. Bartender Mike made us a shot called “Witches Brew” - such a great end to a fun night!
