The Basics

Popular and perpetually busy, St. Mark’s Basilica is the most famous monument in Venice. Avoid the long lines and save time skip-the-line tickets or opt for an after-hours tour for private evening access. While the exterior is visited on just about every city sightseeing tour, a guided tour is the best way to experience the interior, given the complexity of its art and architecture.

A guided private or small-group evening tour offers a unique and intimate experience, and the basilica is located on St. Mark’s Square, so you can easily combine a basilica tour with a gondola ride and a Doge’s Palace tour.

Group or Private Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola
Great tour with a lot of information. We even got a private gondola because of covid 19. We can recommend the tour.

Skip the Line: Best of Venice Walking Tour with St Mark's Basilica
Friendly, knowledgeable guide who tailored the tour to our needs and amended the route when our daughter started feeling unwell. Arranged for a rooftop viewing of Venice when a visit to St. Mark's turned out to be impractical due to COVID

Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tour
The guide was excellent; very knowledgeable of Venice and the history behind it. The skip the line at the Doge's palace was valuable, but recent COVID restrictions made the skip line line impossible for St. Mark's Basilica (for all tour guides in town). Still, the wait to get into the Basilica was not long, and felt even shorter as our guide continue to provide us information during the wait. I would book again if I return to Venice.

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace Group or Private Tour
The three hour tour was excellent. The basilica history and art are worth the tour alone. The Doge Palace and prison were fantastic. The Venetian history that the Palace represents was something we did not really know. Our guide Susan brought everything to life and was extremely knowledgeable. We were very fortunate to have her as our guide Note there is a great deal of walking and stairs on this tour. A couple of persons were able to get an elevator in the Palace thanks to the guide

Venice Skip the line St Mark's Basilica tour
The tour was perfectly organised. We had a tour in English with a tourguide who could vividly tell the history regarding the San Marco's Basilic. We enjoyed it very much. Worth the money and great to skip the line.

Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tour
He learns so much more on a tour than going so low walking through beautiful history like these two places. We had a great guide and I learned very much.

Historic Venice: Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica guided tour & Gondola ride
Due to flooding, we could not visit the Basilica; however, we did tour the Doge Gallery. Our guide was very informative and humorous. He provided a lot of background information about the palace itself as well as Venice as a whole - information that we would not gained had we not used the tour.

Group or Private Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola
Perfect way to get to know Venice on our first day. Our guide, Mosé, was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and he filled the day with interesting information as well as personal stories and anecdotes - I would highly recommend.

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace Group or Private Tour
Great tour with a very knowledgeable and fun guide! She managed to convey the great history of Venice and some fun side stories about the city while visiting those amazing historic sights. Totally worth it!! Wear some good walking shoes and be ready for some steep stairs and tight corners ;) - but don’t worry, it really is manageable, just to be considered for walking impaired people.

Tour guide was awesome and she battled unfair competition for the Doge palace.

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace Group or Private Tour
The tour guide Remy was fantastic and she grew up in Venice and studied architecture. She spent quality time in all locations. Problem is description says “skip the line” which is not true. We waited in long lines as a group. This posed a major problem at Doge palace as the security teams played favorites. Our tour guide was not going to have that and fought back and complained - the right thing to do. .

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The church has been rebuilt, expanded, and delicately restored over the centuries.

  • Like most churches in Italy, St. Mark’s Basilica requires visitors to wear appropriate clothing—no exposed shoulders, knees, or midriffs.

  • Large bags are not permitted in the basilica. Deposit any luggage at Ateneo di San Basso (in Piazzetta dei Leoncini).

  • Both St. Mark's Basilica and the nearby Doge's Palace are wheelchair accessible.

When to Get There

The basilica is most crowded at midday, so begin or end your Venice tour with a morning or late-afternoon visit. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while Venice is relatively quiet from November through February (aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays, and during Carnival).

The Pala d’Oro

St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is famous for Michelangelo's Pietà and Florence’s Duomo is known for Brunelleschi’s dome, but St. Mark’s Basilica’s greatest treasure—the stunning Pala d'Oro—is older than even those masterpieces. This glittering gold and enamel altarpiece from AD 976 is considered one of the most important, refined examples of Byzantine enamel in the world.
