The Basics

Office workers, tourists and locals all pass under the neon lights of Shinjuku. For the best views of the area, head to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building’s free observation tower. Then wander through the sub-neighborhood of Kabukicho, one of the city’s busiest entertainment and red-light districts, or relax in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, a peaceful spot famous for its cherry trees.

In the evening, you can enjoy Tokyo’s street food scene at Memory Lane, an alley that runs behind Shinjuku Station and is packed with little stalls selling yakitori skewers and steaming bowls of ramen. Alternatively, join a nightlife tour to enjoy local izakayas or go bar hopping with a guide who can help you find the best spots and tell you what to order.

Fun night and good food/drinks
The tour was a lot of fun. The places we visited were very nice and the dishes and drinks were also very tasty. The tour guide also was able to give good recommendation of which drinks and dishes to try and was able to give a good atmosphere.

Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku
I did this the first night in Tokyo to get an idea of th bar scene in Shinjuku. I ended up being the only person on the tour... Which was awesome! Got a private tour of Shinjuku at night. It was a great introduction to Shinjuku. I highly recommended this tour my guide Koki was great and so friendly. We shared a love of travel and he also went above and beyond to point out places!

We had a great tour with Shiori. She was very friendly and energetic. She brought us to 3 different bars and had good food as well. She gave us wonderful recommendations on what to do in other areas of Tokyo as well as where to get good Ramen and sushi. She was an excellent guide.

Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku
This is the third time taking this tour in Tokyo. Every time I visit it allows me an opportunity to get out to places that I would never find and have a local experience. Each time the tour leader has been great and I have enjoyed meeting a number of interesting people.

Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku
Shin was our host and he was superb. Took us to 3 different bars and the food was good and range of drinks nice. Some of places were we drank Sake at end was a great find and would go back. Would have been nice to have eaten in the smaller unique places but with numbers may not be possible. This was a 3 hour tour and though expensive found it interesting and well worth the money as Shin our guide was knowledgeable and other people on tour good company.

Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku
This tour was a great way to see the back streets of Tokyo and to make friends. It's so cool to start a tour with an awkward collection of strangers and to conclude the tour as friends.

Izakaya Like a Local

Tokyo Bar Hopping Night Tour in Shinjuku
My husband watches a lot of YouTube of people traveling to different cities and eating in small, local eateries, where they don't have an English menu. That's what he wanted to do while we were in Tokyo and that was the kind of experience that he got on this tour. Our guide, Keina, was a young, hip 20-something local. She spoke very good English. She told us a lot about what life is like as a 20-something in Tokyo and what the culture is like. On our way to our first stop, she took us down an alley that was filled with small izakayas. We would've never found this alley on our own; it might have taken a few trips to Tokyo before we ever found this cool alley. While we didn't stop there on this tour, we went back ourselves the next night and ate at one of the izakayaa where they did have an English menu. Our first stop was a a yakitori izakaya. Our second stop was at a restaurant that offered more seafood options. Our last stop was at a sake bar. The amount of food doesn't sound like a lot, but we were all full after this tour. No one was hungry. We also felt like the amount of drinks we got were plenty of drinks. . I wouldn't have known where to start to find small local eateries, given the limited amount of time we had in Tokyo. Moreover, we would have had a very difficult time trying to order at any of the places we went to because they didn't have an English menu or a menu with pictures on it. It was definitely worth it to have a local guide us through the many restaurants of Tokyo!
