Lake Ashi (Ashi-no-ko)

Hakone National Park, Tokyo, Japan, 250-0521

The Basics

Lake Ashi sits in the volcanic crater of Mount Hakone’s volcanic crater. Aside from the natural beauty and holy Hakone shrine, the lake and surrounding area are known for its many hot springs (onsen). Japanese inns with spa bathhouses (ryokan) can be found in the area surrounding the lake, and many visitors take the opportunity to try traditional Japanese spa rituals here.

A popular tourist destination that's often part of day trips from Tokyo, Lake Ashi is also home to the Narukawa Museum of Art, plus restaurants and historic sites, such as the 400-year-young Old Tokaido Road lined with Japanese cedars, and the well-preserved Hakone Shrine. Traveling to Mount Fuji 5th Station on the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway cable car is one of the top activities to try in the area.

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
We spent a great day with Takashi (guide) and Toshi (driver) in the 5 lakes region. They planned the whole day according to our preferences. We got spectacular views of Mt. Fuji from the different sites. Traffic was very bad coming back due to culture day weekend, but they kept their positive attitude throughout.

our guide Teddy (Tetsuya Ishida) was wonderful and so was the driver. They picked us up at our hotel in a comfortable minivan. They took us as close to Mt. Fuji as possible and the weather was gorgeous so we were able to see Mt. Fuij and take great pictures. The place he took us for lunch (special Hoto Noodle Soup) was in a high elevation with great views of mt. Fuji, and the noodle soup was delicious. We would highly recommend him and his driver.

Our tour operator Taiji was amazing. We had a wonderful experience. We saw some beautiful sites. Taiji went above and beyond our expectation. He was very well informed and knew which places to take us to visit. We had lunch at at an authentic Japanese restaurant overlooking the lake. He even offered to take us to see Tokyo at the end of our tour. It was an experience we will never forget. Thank you Taiji

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
The tour guide Teddy, gave us a very nice tour and customized the itinerary to suit our requests. We saw the Hakone sulphur springs and took the ropeway (cable car) from there to the Lake Ashi. We took the the pirate ship for a tour of the lake. The weather in December a little cool but nice. We were able to see Mt. Fuji for a bit until the clouds came out and covered it up. My wife went to outlets while I went to an onsen (hot spring). We enjoyed the whole experience although the price is slightly high as we had to pay for the pirate ship and cable car in addition to the tour fee.

Our guide Takashi-san has excellent command of English and share with us a lot of information on Mount Fuji, wind/ice cave. He led us to each location and explain clearly. Our driver(Toshi-san) is extremely professional, patiently waiting in the car for us at each site. As we did not manage to catch sunset over Mount Fuji due to bad weather, he volunteer to send us some pictures which he has taken a week earlier. Overall my family enjoyed the trip and the professionalism of both the guide and driver.

In one word - Excellent Trip. The guide, the driver, the route, the narration - everything was great. The chartered tour is expensive but worth it - you decide to stop-start-halt-move-absolute freedom. I liked the chartered tour because it gave us privacy and ample scope to pursue my hobby - photography. So, if you can afford, go for this trip. You won't be disappointed. Last but not the least - our tour guide was terrific - well educated, polite, friendly and very informative. Will take this trip again during my next trip to Tokyo.

Wonderful Trip--Fantastic Guide and Driver

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
We had the most wonderful private tour of Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko going to certain places where there were no crowds yet the most wonderful scenery with Mt Fuji in the background. The 400 step climb to the Pagoda at the beginning of the trip was the perfect start with glorious views of Mt Fuji. We also loved the Ice Cave, the walk through the forest and then the Wind Cave and then the local folk village. Lunch was also a treat with the restuarant uncrowded and the vegetable noodle dish indeed fit for a Samurai. Akio-San, the guide and Tachi-San, the driver, were exceptionally friendly, accomodating and informative and made the day very special. The beautiful weather also helped.

Our trip to the Fuji five lakes area with Takashi was truly memorable. Takashi is a consummate professional and went truly above and beyond to make our trip a great experience for the entire family. While the weather was not quite optimal and Mount Fuji was barely visible, Takashi managed our expectations and figured out ways to make our trip interesting. He was extremely flexible and customized the itinerary to meet our objectives. Takashi’s suggestion to go to Iyashi Na Sato ( healing village) was a great one, and we go to experience life in rural Japan. I personally enjoyed conversing with Takashi on a range of topics regarding Japanese culture, customs and life Japan in general. Takashi also provided good suggestions for other places to visit during our stay in Japan. Our driver was also extremely professional and did a great job of navigating difficult traffic conditions to bring us back on time. A truly memorable trip! Thanks for the wonderful memories!

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
The day started with the storm approaching the region. We were picked up right on time and left Tokyo city with the hopes of a great day. Our guide Teiji, fluent in English and French along with his Japanese was knowledgeable about all the little areas we visited making the trip historically, culturally and geographically very informative. We learnt a lot about the pilgrimage to Mt. Fuji and rain did not stop us. We even got a personalized tour views of the village and region with the perspective of the historic Eido period history. Then came the highlight, the clouds broke and our driver who was fantastic, along with our guide Teiji started chasing clearings for us to get a full view of the great mountain. We ran the 400 steps to the Lonely Planet view at the monument Pagoda and sat on a bench and absorbed the spectacular uncovering of Fujisan. We had great food along the way, picked up souvenirs and had a very comfortable ride back. This was worth every penny and the care and quality of the tour was one of the best we have been on. This tour is a must!! Our guide and driver made this very memorable.

Excellent trip and guide Make sure you can go to mountain since some months if the year private cars not allowed Only buses, Our driver had a disability so we were able to go to top and see the peak, When you book make sure to ask to go to fifth station or ask for a tour with a lot off walking if that is what you like. The lakes around mountain are beautiful but going to top is best You can go above the clouds and the views are serene There is a brewery that. You can visit if you like Sake is cheap and it’s the good stuff

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
Upon confirmation of this private tour, I received an email instructing to contact the tour operator directly. So I called and was happily assisted by Taiji Endo. I found out that there was no available English speaking guide on our selected day but Endo-san promised to try his best to find an English guide for us within the day. True to his words, by afternoon I received an email from him saying he was able to find us one of the best guide in the region. On the day of the tour, we were picked up from our hotel by the best driver Higashi-san, he was very patient with us especially since we were a group of 9 people traveling with 3 kids and 2 senior citizens and so we have to stop for at least 2 toilet breaks and 1 snack break. He also introduced to us some on the popular places we passed by along the way to the meeting place with our local tour guide. We met with the best tour guide Yuko-san.at Fujisan World Heritage Center and she guided us to each of the place in our itinerary. She was quite knowledgeable with the places we visited and brought us to each of the highlights of the place. She even gave us options and alternatives since that day was quite rainy and foggy and so we decided against sightseeing by boat since we wouldn't be able to see Mt. Fuji from the fog anyway. Even though we weren't able to see Mt. Fuji (considering the rainy weather), we all enjoyed the Lava Tunnel, Ninja Village, Music Forest, and strolling around Lake Kawaguchiko.... She also brought us to have lunch to try the local noodles in Mt. Fuji- the hoto noodles and also the fried smelt pond fish. They were quite yummy and the serving was huge. She even brought us some gift of mochi which we really enjoyed eating. We parted with Yuko-san our guide at Kawaguchiko Natural Loving Center around 5:30 pm and our driver Higashi-san drove us back to our hotel. Even though we exceeded our alloted time for the tour, not once did he complain or hurry us up, he even agreed to stop for a toilet break along the way since the drive back was quite long. Overall, the whole family enjoyed this tour. We would definitely get their services again in the future.
