Ephesus Terrace Houses

Open daily, summer 8am-7pm and winter 8am-5pm
Efes Harabeleri , Selcuk, Izmir Province, Turkey, 35920

The basics

Clear signage helps piece together the confusing layout of the houses, which were in use for over 1,000 years. Particular highlights include: the grand marble hall with slender columns; bright frescoes of the Muses, the god Apollo, and the lesbian poet Sappho; gorgeous glass and ceramic mosaics; and elegant bathrooms and central heating systems.

Ephesus group tours and shore excursions generally don’t visit the Terrace Houses as the pathways are a little tight for large groups. A private guide can put the site in context and makes a worthwhile investment if you’re serious about discovering Ephesus.

Private Tour : Half Day Ephesus Tour with Terrace Houses
Ephesus was fascinating! We were so glad we did the terrace houses. They are amazing. Seeing the Temple of Artemis and all the history near by was interesting. We ended the tour with a stop at a leather manufacturer. The leather was the softest leather we have ever touch. Our tour guide, Selda, was very friendly and knowledgeable. We came to Turkey on a cruise, Selda made us want to come back to Turkey and spend more time exploring the beautiful country.

Daily Trip to Ephesus Ancient City, Terrace Houses, Selcuk Archaeology Museum
Our tour guide Erman showed us the amazing history of Ephesus. This was not part of our trip initially but we are glad we booked the tour last minute. This is a must visit to understand the history of the region. Our tour guide Erman is highly capable and spoke perfect English to explain various details of the place.

Our guide was very nice and our shuttle car as well. The sightseeing was really good except for the stop at the leather factory.

Kusadasi Port to Ephesus, Terrace Houses, Temple of Artemis
I booked about six months in advance. Was skeptical things would work out. Amazed at the whole thing. Got off the ship walked to the port entry and there was our guide. He had my name printed out and I felt like a vip. Tour was great and more than expected. I would recommend Viator tour any place anytime.

Ephesus and Terrace Houses Half-Day Private Shore Excursion
Bülent was a wonderful and welcome surprise on my recent one day cruise stop in Ephesus. He was extremely personable, knowledgeable, and flexible during our tour through the ruins. Afterwards we went for a tasty traditional Turkish lunch. There were two separate drivers for different parts of the tour but they were very professional and the vehicles immaculate. I will definitely be back.

100% Worth it

UNESCO World Heritage Tour of Ephesus and Terrace Houses from Izmir,Izmir Hotels
This tour was amazing. It was really a private tour so it was the three of us who booked it. The Guide was kind, was very excited about the site and you could not even think he does this on a daily basis given how enthusiastic he seemed himself about the location. He was EXTREMELY well balanced providing us with a lot of good information but also with plenty of time to take our photos. I have had guides in the past who want your undivided attention and get angry if you look away to get a photo but he is not one of those, on the contrary... he gets to a place, tells you the stories he needs to and tells you "please take as many photos as you want and I'll meet you over there" and provide you free time to explore and take photos. He did not feel pushy, he was kind, was friendly very knowledgeable and I could NOT have asked for a better tour. For someone who hates tours (yes, I actually dislike them) this was one of the only two times I can say I enjoyed it and was totally worth it. I am unsure if there are other tour guides attached to this but if you get mine, I can tell you you would love it!

Amazing cultural site

Kusadasi Port to Ephesus, Terrace Houses, Temple of Artemis
Ephesus is an amazing experience and well worth visiting if you enjoy visiting cultural sites. The guide was very knowledgeable. My only criticism was the visit to a carpet making factory and a leather fashion show that wasted an hour and was not mentioned when booking

Things to know before you go

  • Entrance to the terrace houses is not included with the main Ephesus archaeological site ticket. Pay the small additional charge on arrival or book a tour that includes it.
  • The terrace houses are accessed by steps. Back carriers, not strollers, are the way forward when visiting with kids.
  • While there is wheelchair access to much of the Ephesus site, the terraced houses are not accessible.

How to get there

The houses sit on Ephesus’ main hill, opposite the Temple of Hadrian, inside the Ephesus archaeological site. That’s just outside the little town of Selcuk, about a 12-mile (20-kilometer) drive northeast of the Aegean coast cruise port and resort town of Kusadasi. The nearest airport, Izmir, lies about a 37-mile (60-kilometer) drive to the north.

When to get there

Like the rest of Ephesus, the Terrace Houses are open seven days a week, closing in the early evening during the summer season (April–October) and late afternoon in low season. They are less busy than more photogenic sights such as the Library of Celsus, so plan your Ephesus route around the bigger ticket attractions.

Other Ancient Cities Near Ephesus

Three other Greco-Roman cities with UNESCO World Heritage status lie within easy reach of Ephesus. Hierapolis, a sacred spa town above the Pamukkale travertine hot springs, is around a 2.5-hour drive; the temples and theater of Aphrodisias, once capital of Lydia, can be reached in two hours; the hilltop city of Pergamon and its ancient medical center are also around a 2-hour drive away.
