The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Colosseum and Roman Forum for Kids Private Tour
My family really enjoyed having a private skip the line tour of the colosseum and forum. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and patient with our kids. Romania when even over her time (can’t guarantee that for everyone) to show us sites and to point us to one of the best dining experiences I had in Roma. A place that had the best porchetta. I would definitely recommend.
Worthwhile taking the tour

Skip-the-Line Colosseum Ticket with Optional Tour Guide Access Upgrade
I’ve been to the Colosseum before but this is the first time I’ve booked a tour and is was so worth it! If you are the type of person who likes to do all of the research before taking a trip, you may not need this. But if you are like me and don’t have time for in-depth research, I highly recommend this tour. Our tour guide Augustino did a wonderful job providing many details about the history as well as answering questions with useful information.

What a great tour of the colosseum! Donato was amazing with our kids (10, 7, and 5) and kept them engaged for 2.5 hours! I highly recommend for families with young children.

VIP Colosseum Tour
Our tour guide was wonderful. The colosseum was very busy but our guide navigated the crowds well and gave us a great small-group experience in the middle of what would otherwise have been chaos. I and my two teenaged boys learned so much and our guide made the stories fun. Definitely recommend.

Skip the Line: Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small-Group Walking Tour Including Pantheon and Piazza Navona
The guide gave a comprehensive tour explaining the colosseum and surrounding areas. It was a little tricky to find, but they were standing very near the metro stop under a tree. Lots of history to digest. So much to see!
Great Experience

Skip the Line: Colosseum Small Group Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Our tour and guide was great. We learned a lot and it was nice to be able to cut all the lines. Wear very comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking. Everything was very organized. We went on a Friday in the summer and it was very crowded. This tour does not go underground into the colosseum but we were able to look down into it from the first floor.

Self-Guided Tour Colosseum Skip-the-Line Ticket
Exactly what we were looking for. Quick and easy way to get into the Colosseum without waiting in the lines. Also allowed us to take it in at our own pace and not part of a tour group.

Ancient Rome and Colosseum Private Tour with Underground Chambers and Arena
Frans was such an incredible guide - not only did he have an excellent knowledge of history, but his passion and enthusiasm really brought the Colosseum to life, especially for our 12 year old son. His ‘inside’ tips and knowledge were invaluable and made getting in and around easy and he knew all the best places to take photos. His English was excellent. Thank you Frans for making our trip to the Colosseum so memorable and enjoyable!

Colosseum with Arena Access and Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
I’m glad I chose this particular tour and David was like our own historian. Unfortunately it was a major heat wave in June and it was a little hard to be out side but our tour guide David made sure he found shaded areas to speak to us near the sights. You get to go in the Colosseum and see and learn about the battles. Our tour guide was David was excellent! Very knowledgeable and friendly. You’ll see other historical sights as well!

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
