Archea Olimpia, Pyrgos, Elis, Peloponnese, Greece, 270 65

The Basics

The Olympic Games were held in Olympia every four years for almost a thousand years before being disbanded in the fourth century. However, the history of Olympia goes back much farther, as for centuries it was the most celebrated shrine in ancient Greece. Pilgrims traveled there to worship Zeus and his wife Hera in the temples of the city’s Altis (sanctuary of the gods).

As one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites, the ancient city still attracts travelers from across the globe. Although visiting with a guide is ideal, independent travelers can get by using an audio guide or virtual reality glasses. Gourmands might opt for a tour that pairs a stop at Ancient Olympia with a honey and olive oil tasting at a nearby farm. For an in-depth jaunt into antiquity, go for a multi-day tour that takes in magnificent sites like Olympia, Epidaurus, and Mycenae.

Private Tour from Athens to Corinth Canal and Ancient Olympia
Great trip! Andreas, our driver/guide was great. We altered our trip to go to Loutraki and Nafpoli instead of the longer drive to Ancient Olympia. Good choice. This is an all day trip. Beautiful scenery worth the trip away from city.

4-Day Classical Greece Tour: Epidaurus, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora
My favorite part was the storytelling of all the archaeological sites from our tour guide. Our tour guide was Joy and she was delightful and very knowledgeable. I could tell she enjoyed doing her job. I could have spent the entire day talking with her about Greek history and mythology. Everything that was described and included about the tour delivered completely. The hotels we stayed at were clean and nice. The meals included in the tour was okay. Not the best, but good enough.

Ancient Olympia/ Ancient Corinth private tour from Athens/ Piraeus (up 12 hours)
This is a private tour. Olympia and Corinth are far from Athens. With the private driver, we managed to visit both sites within one day. The driver/tour guide did a great job to share with us the information about Olympia and Corinth. He also answered a lot of questions from my family about Greece history. We learned a lot from this trip! We felt it worth the money! Thank you, Nikolaos!

Olympia - Half day Tour
Our tour guide, Andreas, was wonderful! He was very accommodating and flexible in picking us up and dropping us off, and he even took us to an excellent local lunch spot to eat towards the end of our tour. He was knowledgeable in his commentary of the city and gave us enough time to explore the sites and see everything we were hoping to. The honey farm was adorable and a very nice treat during our day.

Katakolon 7hour tour : Olympia-Honey Farm-Winery-Beach
We could not recommend this tour more highly. For about the same price as a group tour from the cruise ship, you get a customized, private experience. Our driver was extremely friendly and very punctual. Our tour guide for Olympia was engaging and fantastic. Lunch at the Olive Grove afterwards was exceptional and the tour of the Honeyfarm at the end was a great way to finish the day.

Olympia Walking Tour with Virtual Reality Glasses
This was a very enjoyable way to experience Ancient Olympia. It took a second to get the hang of but that didn't detract from the experience. It was great to be able to see the complex as it once was. The live action scenes were hilarious. The company was super friendly and easy to work with.

How to Get There

West of Athens in the foothills of Mount Kronos, Olympia is best reached by car—the trip from the capital city takes around four hours via the A7. The site is often visited as part of full-day or multi-day tours of classical Greece, or shore excursions from the nearby port of Katakolon.

When to Get There

Ancient Olympia is usually open daily, except for major holidays. The temperature can soar at midday, and there’s very little shade—so tour the ruins in the early morning or late afternoon, and duck into the museum during the hottest hours.

Highlights of Ancient Olympia

Excavations at Olympia began in 1829, and today the complex is scattered with fragments of ancient paving, statuaries, temples, and civic buildings. Only one column remains of the Temple of Zeus, but that’s enough to grasp the sheer size of the original building. The Temple of Hera is better preserved, and it’s there that the Olympic flame is lit before it journeys across the world.
