The Basics

Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo di Orvieto) is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Italy, begun in the early 1200s based on a design by Arnolfo di Cambio, who also designed Florence’s duomo. The original plan was Romanesque, but was transformed into the more fashionable Italian Gothic over the centuries; the facade designed by Sienese sculptor and architect Lorenzo Maitani is one of the great architectural masterpieces of its time, covered with splendid mosaics and bas-reliefs and crowned by Orcagna’s 14th-century rose window. Inside, the main nave has the same stark stripes of white travertine and gray basalt stone as the external walls, but the apse is richly frescoed, as are the Chapel of the Corporal and the Chapel of the Madonna of San Brizio, the latter decorated by Signorelli’s masterfulApocalypse and the Last Judgment fresco cycle.

Orvieto is just over an hour outside Rome, and a popular day trip along with nearby Cività di Bagnoregio and Assisi. Join a walking tour of Orvieto that includes an in-depth visit of the Cathedral, or zip around the medieval center on an electric bike. The entrance to Orvieto’s popular underground tour is just across the square from the duomo, so you can easily pair a visit to the town’s most famous above-ground attraction with a tour of its warren of underground tunnels and caves.

Assisi and Orvieto Full-Day Semi-Private Tour from Rome
Paid for a semi private tour and were treated to a private tour. Had a driver and separate guide. Both were congenital. Great way to see mystical cities of Assisi and Orvieto. Guide gave full explanation of where we were going and history of sights. Guide and driver arrived early. It was a hot day, wish bottled water was included. Also explained sights driving to Assisi.

Assisi and Orvieto Day Trip from Rome
This was a lovely day trip. Picked up at our hotel, comfortable touring bus. Orvieto is a quaint village on top of a plateau. Shopping and sightseeing. Lunch along the route to Assisi was good in comfortable setting. Assisi tour was fabulous, guided by a local resident. Stunning! We definitely recommend this day trip when in Rome.

Best Of Civitavecchia Shore Tour: Orvieto & Civita Di Bagnoregio Tour
The attractions are wonderful. The guide was very professional and knowledge. We are very please with his services. The only thing we hope Viator can be improved is the scheduling of the pickup time. The Viator never told us the scheduled pickup time. The guide tried to contact us via phone call and text a couple days prior to the tour date. Since we were on board already, we did not see the VM and text message until the day before. When I tried to call, the only response I got was in Italian which I could NOT understand. The Viator confirmation info told me that they willl pick us us at the port and never tell us if it is a bus, van or private car. The previous experiences I had with Viator were using bus. Therefore we did not know that we need to contact anyone prior to arrange pickup time ourselves. Hope Viator can improve on the communication with their customers.

Orvieto e Civita di Bagnoregio: full-day tour from Rome
We truly enjoyed our trip to Orvieto and Civita, which included a wine tasting at a beautiful winery. We loved the fact that in addition to the organized tour of the Orvieto tunnels, we got two hours to explore each town on our own. We also thought that the wine tasting provided a great way to relax between the visits to the two towns. Our driver was very friendly and we enjoyed talking to him while we were traveling. This was my fourth trip to Italy and am happy that I finally got to visit these two amazing towns.

Assisi and Orvieto Day Trip from Rome
Love that the tour was early enough for us to experience a not-so crowded Orvieto. I was just bummed that the tower was closed until 10:30 AM which was the time we had to leave for lunch (it was good for the most part, but the pasta was a tad too salty). Assisi was fantastic. It's such a magnificent place with so much history and significance. Eleonora was funny and informative.

Assisi and Orvieto Day Trip from Rome
Our tour guide was wonderful, very informative, knowledgeable and good sense of humor. She was very good and I recommend her for anything she is part of. I am sorry that I forgot her name. It started with S and she had reddish hair and glasses. (Sorry, we really liked you too!) OUr tour was on All Saints day, Nov. 1,2019. It was very crowded but she kept us all together and in stride. It was beautiful everywhere and so much fun! Thank you!

Assisi and Orvieto Day Trip from Rome
Christa was our guide, she was very knowledgeable and informative. The church in Orvieto took my breath away, and the day just got better when we went to Assisi. Lunch was good, it would have been helpful to know what we were eating, It was a great trip, I would go again!

Assisi and Orvieto Day Trip from Rome
1st of all the tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable, which was very impressive, not just to these two particular areas but all of Italy. Also they tried to be accommodating, which was nice. They were Very friendly. Not a whole lot of time for shopping but then that could be a blessing on the pocketbook.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Modest attire is required to enter the church, so be sure to cover your shoulders and knees.

  • Walking tours of the duomo and city of Orvieto cover quite a bit of ground; comfortable shoes are recommended.

  • The cathedral is accessible via a secondary entrance to the left of the main staircase; the internal chapels are all accessible.

  • Flash photography isn’t allowed inside the church.

The Corporal of Bolsena

Orvieto’s impressive cathedral was built to house the Corporal of Bolsena. A corporal is a small square of cloth that holds the communion host and wine chalice during Mass, and in 1263 a host is said to have miraculously dripped blood onto the corporal below in the nearby town of Bolsena. The stained cloth, known as the Corporal of Bolsena, is now displayed in the duomo’s Chapel of the Corporal, and has been attracting pilgrims for almost 800 years.
