Brüning National Archaeological Museum
The Basics
During the late 19th and early 20th century, German archaeologist Hans Heinrich Brüning Brookstedt devoted his life to Northern Peru, toiling along the desert coastline in search of ceramics and cultural artifacts from the Moche, Chimu, and Inca. This museum is a showcase for his life’s work. Soak up the rooms full of cultural treasures—including one filled entirely with gold objects—and Brüning’s photography from years in the field. Opt for a private tour as the museum does not offer much background information.
Most tours leave from Chiclayo and add visits to the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, where the riches and remains of the tomb of Lord of Sipán are displayed, and the Huaca Rajada, where the Lord of Sipán tomb was originally foundxa0 and exquisite gold artifacts are shown.

How to Get There
Brüning National Archaeological Museum is located on Avenida Huamachuco at the principal park of Lambayeque, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) north of Chiclayo and about five blocks from the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum. From the city center, take regular buses or taxis to easily get to the museum.
When to Get There
The museum is open daily from morning until afternoon except on holidays. Chiclayo’s dry season runs from May to September, while the rainy season runs from December to March. From May to July, Chiclayo and the surrounding area celebrates its colorful festival season fireworks, parades, and handicraft fairs.
Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum
Just down the street is this most complementary museum. Visit both for a deeper appreciation of the ancient cultures of northern Peru. Inside this striking pyramidal structure, whose modern design plays off the shape of the Moche tomb of the Lord of Sipán, you’ll find the ancient remains, artifacts and treasures of the co-called “King Tut of Peru,” including his dazzling gold and silver and jeweled headdresses and armored plates.
