Boulevard des Arenes, Nimes, France

The Basics

Nimes makes a popular day trip destination from Avignon, Arles, and Marseille. Typically, day trips combine exploration of Nimes with the Roman town of Uzes, a visit to the Pont du Gard aqueduct, and wine tasting in the Languedoc wine region.

Nimes itself is best explored on a walking tour, which typically cover the city’s Roman ruins and landmarks such as Nîmes Cathedral and Jardins de la Fontaine.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
Our guide was so knowledgeable and knew just where to take us. The Pont du Gard was awesome. It was the right amount of time being a half day trip and in the morning was good because of the heat.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
Our trip was wonderful and memorable thanks to Anne, she drove, guided and showed us all main tourist attractions in Nimes and Uzes. She’s also a good photographer who helped to shoot many beautiful photos. I highly recommend her for your tours. Thanks again Anne!

Relaxing ride in the country

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
This was a very good, casual tour to see the highlights of the three locations. It was a bit of a drive between the stops, but our guide entertained us with information how the weather and soil combine to produce such fine grapes and wine. Instead of only showing the sites, we learned the history and the significance of the sites.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
Ann knew the best photo spots and she was glad to take some of us with noteworthy backgrounds like the Pont du Gard or the coliseum in Nîmes. There was a lot to see in a long half day but for us it was time we’ll spent. You don’t have a lot of time in any one spot. We learned a lot even though we’d done preliminary reading. Helps that we had a beautiful sunny day.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
This tour was very good for seeing a little of Nimes, Uzes and the Pont du Gard and was the only way we could have done it in the time.. We would have liked more time to explore Nimes ideally. The minivan was very clean and comfortable and the guide extremely knowledgeable - it was like a university education in the area's history! Guillaime was very personable and happy to answer all sorts of questions. We enjoyed the morning and would recommend the tour.

Pont du Gard was amazing. Ann was a fantastic guide. She was punctual on the pick up, spoke excellent English, knew her history of the sites and was a great driver on the twisty hilly roads.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
Guillaume was our guide and driver and was extremely knowledgeable about French history and kept us informed and amused throughout the trip. Good amount of times at the Pont du Gard, but could have done with more time in Nimes to see more of the arena. Uzes was also interesting and gave us taste of the area.

Our tour guide Gordana was lovely and full of knowledge. We had a wonderful day learning about Provence and Gard history. The car was comfortable. Gordana went out of her way to accomodate our needs and make our trip as enjoyable as possible. This is a wonderful half-day trip from Avignon with adequate time to see the sites and towns. We would highly recommend this day trip. Good value for money as well!

Gordana was an extremely knowledgeable, articulate and accommodating guide. The tour was well paced and we were able to see many highlights of the region without feeling rushed or that we were skipping anything. This tour is highly recommended, especially if you have a limited amount of time to spend in Provence.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
Gordano was an excellent and friendly guide who provided lots of great information. She gave us time for pictures, and made special stops to allow us to do so. Six of us in her comfortable van, water bottles provided which was a nice touch. Definitely recommend this tour with Gordano (sp?).

When to Get There

The most popular time to visit Nimes is during the summer months of July and August, when it’s recommended to book accommodation and tours well in advance. Other atmospheric times to visit are during the summer Festival of Nimes, when you can enjoy evening concerts in the Arènes de Nîmes, and over the festive season, when Christmas parades and markets are held in the city center. If visiting on a day trip, avoid Sundays and Mondays when many shops and restaurants are closed.

Roman Ruins in Nimes

Once an important Roman city, traces of Nimes’ Roman legacy are still dotted around the city. Must-see archaeological sites include the well-preserved Arènes de Nîmes, which dates back to before AD 200 and holds up to 24,000 spectators. There’s also the Maison Carrée temple, which was the inspiration for Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia State Capitol building; the Tour Magne tower, which was part of the original Roman fortifications; and the Temple of Diana. Just outside the city, the Pont du Gard is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in the world.
