With a history dating back to the Bronze Age, Nimes is one of France’s oldest cities. Its Roman ruins—which include the UNESCO-listed Pont du Gard aqueduct and Colosseum-inspired Arènes de Nîmes—still take centerstage in the modern city.

Nimes, Uzes & Pont du Gard Small Group Half-Day Tour from Avignon
"This was a very good, casual tour to see the highlights of the three locations. It was a bit of a drive between the stops, but our guide entertained us with information how the weather and soil combine to produce such fine grapes and wine. Instead of only showing the sites, we learned the history and the significance of the sites."..."

Roman Sites and Historical Places Small-Group Day Trip from Avignon
"A must for better understanding of Roman influence/impact in France, if not for the sheer awe-inspiring Pont du Gard aqueduct. We then joined the afternoon tour of Luberon area for wine and olive oil tasting. Guide had a great handle on the history and culture of the region."..."

Half Day Pont-du-Gard, Uzès, Nîmes Tour from Avignon
"Our guide for the day, Thierry, did much more than required to make our day a special one. Moreover, he knew his local history and its larger context -- after all, the day is all about Roman history -- and he also managed to work in some medieval history, too. I particularly enjoyed the Pont-du-Gard aquaduct (be sure to see it from the top of the cliffs on each side of the structure, which requires ascending a lot of steps, but it will be worth it, particularly if the sun striked one side of the ruin more than the other), the Roman arena in Nîmes (which as far as I'm concerned is a full-fledged Roman colliseum, so massive is it -- even if much smaller than the one in Rome), and don't forget the Roman temple only a block or two away in Nîmes, which is well worth seeing because it's so well-preserved. (I had the impression that seeing the temple was "optional," though I could be wrong -- in any event, I certainly did not want to miss it, especially since it was such a short walk from the arena.) The visit to Uzes has nothing to do with Roman history, but it's a nice place to take a break between the Roman ruins in Pont-du-Gard and Nîmes, and since the Uzes visit falls around lunch time you can grab a bit to eat there. I highly recommend the ratatouille at Les Terroirs, if you want to experience this classic local fare (which was often surprisingly absent from menus elsewhere): it was perfect, and quite possibly the best dish I ate while in France."..."
